Back to School Season: An App to Keep Track of Your Children (and Family)

school app

It’s Back to School time!

Oftentimes, after kids go to school, we worry if they got there ok by bus or walking–and after school, we often want to be sure they get home…

There’s an app to help you keep track. Of course, the child must have an iPhone, iPod or iPad to be able to work with this app and also have this app on their device.

This app is called “Find My Friends”. It has to be installed on your iPad, iPhone or iPod as well as your child’s. It is FREE!

You can use this to keep track of your other family members and friends (with their permission, smile)–they have to have the same app. It can also be useful to keep track of your elderly relatives.

The link to this app on the iTunes store is as follows: link.

Editorial #134: Guest Editorial on This Labor Day Weekend-The Mayonnaise Jar Lesson

mayo jarWhen things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day is not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and two cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and fills it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “YES”.

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things – God, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions. Things, that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else — the small stuff.” he said.

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “There is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you…” he told them.

“So… pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Worship with your family.

Play with your children.

Take your partner out to dinner.

Spend time with good friends.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap. Take care of the golf balls first — the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled and said, “I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.

What is the Best Car Mount and GPS App for Your iPhone/iPad? What Features Should I Look for?

mountDr. Z has a car mount for his iPhone for GPS navigation purposes, NOT TEXTING!

There are so many different car mounts on the market. Which one should you choose?

Dr. Z uses one from “RAM”–you can find it on Amazon. It is a very sturdy mount and comes with a lifetime warranty. It has a strong suction (better than my Garmin) and I prefer using Waze or Google Maps for GPS than my Garmin. I do not yet recommend Apple’s Maps app as it gave me directions to an empty field instead of a store once. It will get better.

The RAM mount has a lifetime warranty. The other day one small part broke, and I filled out a form on their website and got a replacement part in a few days!

You can get an iPad mount and it costs more and using an iPad mount in a car is a bit too big for the driver to use GPS. I have not tried this yet. Again RAM makes great iPad mounts. They even have iPad mounts for your boat, airplane, what have you. You can attach it via suction or a clamp or even a special clamp for your car’s vent.

When using Google Maps or Waze, they have great search, just type the name of the store and the city, and you will get a listing and then tap that store and the map will come up! Waze uses Google search so itsa neat thing to have.

Happy and safe driving (NO TEXTING!!! Dr. Z cares.)

How To Get the Best Stand for Your iPad? What Features Should I Look for?

ipad standThe iPad is becoming a very popular device for video communication.

Of course, we need to have a good stand for the iPad to do video. The Smart Cover can do the job–but its not flexible for video communication, it can be used in an emergency but not for daily video communication.

Dr. Z has a Mophie stand which is a great one, but there are many others on the market. Those stands should have the following features:

  • it must be easy to move from one place to another (no wires needed except when charging)
  • it must be able to rotate from portrait to landscape mode
  • it must be able to move the camera up and down easy
  • it must be easy to charge
  • it must make it easy for you to to remove and put back the iPad on the stand

The most important feature is to be able to adjust the position of the camera.

Believe me, the iPad works better and easier than an old set-top box with a TV–the iPad with a stand needs less space on your desk! And when not charging, it doesn’t need a wire! It can be moved from one place to another easy!

No Wifi? How Can You Use Your iPad? Here’s How!

no-wifiMany of us have iPads with wifi only (no 3G or 4G) and you are in a place with no wifi…how can u get wifi?

There are 3 ways.

Get an Apple AirPort Express router or a good quality router. ($99) (link)

or

Get a mobile hotspot from ATT, Verizon or Sprint. (pricing varies, plus a monthly cost)

or

Use your smartphone as a hotspot. This feature is called tethering and the cost varies between ATT, Verizon and Sprint. Also not all smartphones have tethering and not all plans have tethering. The cost is usually a monthly cost with some data caps.

With an AirPort Express or a similar router, you can connect the router to a wired ethernet connector (blue wire) and then you can connect your iPad to that router. The configuration is not that easy, sometimes you need to get help, but it does work. The advantage is, the signal is usually very strong and very good for video. And there’s no monthly cost.

With a mobile hotspot, the cost varies from one provider to another and there’s a monthly cost as well. Also with the monthly cost, there are data caps, which can limit how much you can use the device for the month. Sometimes, depending on the strength of the connection, you can use video.

Want a Text Radio for Your iPad or iPhone? Dr. Z Makes a Discovery!

Radio? That’s the last thing that comes to mind for a deaf person. Text radio? Not a bad idea–it’s visible radio…how can this be done?

Dr. Z found a cool iOS app called TwitterTicker ($1.99 at the iTunes Store)

Set it up with your Twitter feeds–news, sports, weather, deaf community blogs, etc.

Select the feed with the app and the tweets will appear on a page by itself for several seconds before going on to the next one.

Presto! It’s a radio, sort of!

(DO NOT USE IT IF YOU ARE THE DRIVER–DR. Z ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE IRRESPONSIBLE USE OF TEXTING WHILE DRIVING.)

But it can keep you occupied as a passenger or while you are working in the kitchen. Try it–it will blow your mind!

By the way, if you need to make video calls, there’s Z5 Mobile…

Of course, this is the best video communication app. Dr. Z uses it with a 4G connection on the road and it works beautifully. Need I say more? Leave the Z5 Mobile on all the time and use it to make VRS calls, point to point, FaceTime and send text messages from just one contact list!

Editorial #133: Guest Editorial on This Independence Day-FDR’s Four Freedoms

FDR

This was an address FDR gave to Congress on January 6, 1941–still very true today…

In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.

The first is freedom of speech and expression — everywhere in the world.

The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way — everywhere in the world.

The third is freedom from want — which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants — everywhere in the world.

The fourth is freedom from fear — which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor– anywhere in the world.

That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called new order of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb.

To that new order we oppose the greater conception — the moral order. A good society is able to face schemes of world domination and foreign revolutions alike without fear.

Since the beginning of our American history, we have been engaged in change — in a perpetual peaceful revolution — a revolution which goes on steadily, quietly adjusting itself to changing conditions — without the concentration camp or the quick-lime in the ditch. The world order which we seek is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society.

This nation has placed its destiny in the hands and heads and hearts of its millions of free men and women; and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights or keep them. Our strength is our unity of purpose.

To that high concept there can be no end save victory.

Dr. Z cares about your communication access and is humbled by his involvement in the first freedom (speech and expression — everywhere in the world) with his colleagues at ZVRS.
