We all know the story. In 1621, the Pilgrims, who one year prior had sailed to the new world seeking a fresh start and a free life, shared a special dinner with their Wampanoag neighbors. Thus started the uniquely American tradition that came to be Thanksgiving.

It wasn’t until 1863 that Thanksgiving ascended to national holiday status. It was established by President Lincoln, who wanted to give Americans a bit of renewed perspective — and hope — during the depths of the Civil War.

Today, Thanksgiving is bigger than ever, with virtually all Americans celebrating this marvelous day. It’s a fabulous time, with family and friends, enjoying a sumptuous feast and, yes, televised football games.

As customary as turkey on the table and pigskin on the TV is the classic Thanksgiving toast. Hosts or guests often find it proper to say a few words — of gratitude and charm along with grace, humor and bountiful feeling.

When we raise our glasses this year, we give thanks to those who made the world a more accessible place for deaf and hard of hearing people everywhere through video.
